Pineapple pizza

It’s our favorite time of the year! October is National Pizza Month and we just get so excited we can’t hide it. In honor of all things pizza and to celebrate the pizza pies we sling here at Pizza Planet, check out some neat facts you may not have heard of!

October is National Pizza Month!

Not to be redundant, but this is a great month for us to celebrate! It was created in 1984 by Gerry Durnell, the publisher of Pizza Today Magazine.

Nobody knows how the word ‘pizza’ originated

Nope, nobody. What we do know is that the word “Pizza” was first documented around 997 AD in Gaeta, Italy. The term then started to spread to different parts of central and southern Italy. Pizza is now a globally-known term.

Hawaiian pizza was invented in Canada, eh

In 1962, Sam Panopoulos was a pizzeria owner who was bored to death with the three toppings on his menu. So this Greek immigrant decided to toss a can of pineapples in with the mushrooms, bacon, and pepperoni on hand. Before you know it, the Hawaiian pizza was born.

There’s a special word for the outer edge of pizza

And it’s not ‘crust’! The actual term for pizza crust is ‘cornicione’, which translates into “end crust”

World War II helped bring pizza to America

Before World War II, pizza in America was mostly confined to the small Italian communities in large cities. But during the war, Italy was occupied by the Allied troops who took an interest in the local fare. Pizza proved to be a smash hit with the soldiers, and when they came home after the war, they swarmed the pizzerias with requests for their favorite Italian meal.

Somebody actually ate 200 pounds of pizza

And they ate it in just one week! This world record was set in 2006 by Cristian Dumitru of Romania. He toppled over the previous record set by Takeru Kobayashi.

Pizza inspired math

There is a mathematical theorem named the Pizza theorem. It states the equality of two areas that arise when one partitions a disk in a certain way. Who knew math could make a person hungry?

The pizza industry is worth $37 billion

Not bad for a food that was once known as “pauper’s fare”. The pizza industry is a big one for the American economy. Pizzerias employ over a million people in over 73,000 stores across the nation.

Leave dough-spinning to the professionals

Tossing dough is a professional sport! At the World Pizza Championships, there are five competitive events: Freestyle Acrobatic Dough Tossing (which has a masters division), Fastest Dough, Largest Dough Stretch, Fastest Pizza Box Folding and a Pizza Triathlon. Imagine all the flying dough pies in the sky as the best compete against the best!
