October Is National Pizza Month: Check Out These World Records!
Friday, October 2nd, 2020
Around the globe, pizza is considered a favorite meal to enjoy with family and friends. It’s prepared in a number of different ways and often features unconventional toppings. Not surprisingly, world records have been set that focus solely on pizza. October is National Pizza Month and to celebrate, here are some exciting feats set by enthusiasts and chefs. From the largest pizza, to the most slices ever eaten in 10 minutes, the following are just some of these amazing records.
The world’s largest pizza
A restaurant in Rome, Italy baked the largest pizza in the world on December 13, 2012. Andrea Mannocchi, Dovilio Nardi, Marco Nardi, Matteo Nardi, and Matteo Giannotte prepared and cooked the food with a surface area of 13,508.28 square feet. The entire pie was 100 percent gluten-free for the health-conscious audience. Together, they called their creation, “Ottavia” after the first Roman Emperor Octavian Augustus.
The world’s longest pizza
The goal of this world record was to cover as much distance as possible when the record-breaking event took place on May 19, 2006 in Naples, Italy. The final product was over one mile in distance. 250 chefs came together to cook the pie on five motorized wood-burning ovens, which were specially-made for this event. The ingredients used were close to 4,500 pounds of flour, over 4,000 pounds of mozzarella cheese, and over 3,500 pounds of tomato sauce. They also used nearly 50 gallons of olive oil and close to 70 pounds of basil. The cooking took over six hours to complete, and the pizza was donated to the needy by the chefs.
The world’s heaviest pizza
This world record was all about the density of the pizza itself. The winner of this creation is Norwood Hypermarket in Norwood, South Africa. The winning pie was about 123 feet in diameter and weighed almost 27,000 pounds. The ingredients included over 9,900 pounds of flour, around 4,000 pounds of cheese, and just under 2,000 pounds of chopped tomatoes. A little over 1,700 pounds of mushrooms and close to 2,000 pounds of tomato puree we also used.
The fastest time to eat a 12-inch pizza
Speed-eating world records are everywhere and they often come with strict rules. The fastest time to eat a 12-inch pizza is a popular world record to attempt and the record-holder is Kevin Medina of the Philippines. His winning event took place on April 15, 2015, with a time of 23.62 seconds. The record was achieved in a head-to-head competition.
The most pizza eaten in 10 minutes
To achieve this world record, one must consume the most amount of pizza in a designated time. These contests are very popular in the United States, especially during the summer. Speed eating champion Joey Chestnut holds this record as well. He ate 45 slices of pizza in a 10-minute span during a contest held in New York’s Time Square. For his effort, Chestnut was awarded $5,000 in prize money after he beat out 10 other contestants.
The world’s largest commercial pizza
A single order from Moontower Pizza Bar in Burleson, Texas can land you with the largest commercial pizza available. This giant menu item is eight feet long and 34 inches wide. With a price tag of $300, you’ll need a few friends to help eat this meal.
The world’s largest pizza delivery order
A special cause was the reason for this world record. Pizzas and Patriots is a charity that wanted to deliver pizzas to our service men and women overseas. On the Fourth of July in 2012, they hired Great Kitchen to make 30,000 12-inch pizzas, which were delivered to U.S. airfields in the Middle East.
